Recently, two radically different numerical methods for simulating atmospheric and oceanic fluid dynamics were fused into one algorithm resulting in a substantial, unprecedented improvement in solution accuracy and computational efficiency compared to existing, conventional methods (Dritschel and Ambaum, 1997). This talk reviews this new, hybrid algorithm, illustrates how it compares against the methods commonly used, and discusses recent extensions of it to weakly non-conservative fields.
